Gasps and disbelief at Malinin's home rink as Olympic dream falters

Disaster struck at the Winter Olympics as Ilia Malinin, the world famous American figure skater, failed to win his expected gold medal and came in eighth.

At SkateQuest, the skating rink in Virginia where Malinin trains, a watch party of family, friends, and supporters all gathered to watch the shocking moment the skater failed to make the podium.

Nicknamed 'Quad God' after his quadruple axel spin, Malinin is the first and only skater to successfully land the move in international competition. He failed to pull off the move on Friday, and scored a 156.33, a far cry from the world record of 238.24 he set in December last year.
