Firefighters tackle blaze at historic rugby club

Fire crews were called out to a "devastating" blaze at a rugby club which was founded 145 years ago.

A spokesperson for Penarth Rugby Club, which dates back to 1880, said the fire swept through its clubhouse, destroying precious trophies and memorabilia.

The community was "in a state of shock" following the blaze in the early hours of Monday, they added.

The alarm was raised by residents Alison Jones and her husband, Alistair, who live behind the club and were woken at 05:00 GMT by the fire breaking out.

Posting on social media, the club said so many memories had been lost, "but thankfully no-one was hurt" and fire crews had managed to save the club's historic stand.
