Luton airport car park fire thefts are investigated by police

Police are investigating reported thefts from vehicles at the Luton airport car park destroyed by a fire.

The blaze broke out and rapidly escalated in Terminal Car Park 2 on 10 October, when about 1,300 vehicles were parked inside.

The airport said about 70% of vehicles had since been removed from the car park, which is being demolished in preparation for a replacement.

Bedfordshire Police said it was working with the airport.

A force spokesperson said: "We have been made aware of items being allegedly removed from the now disused multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport which was affected by a fire in October last year."

An airport spokesman said any allegations of criminal activity were taken very seriously and were for police to investigate.

Last month it was announced that the most probable cause of the fire was an electrical fault or a component failure in a moving diesel vehicle.

At its height, more than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze, which saw aircraft grounded until the following day, the fire service said.

A full report by the fire service is expected in September.

A man who was arrested by police after the blaze was released without charge.
