New skatepark opens in time for Christmas
South Kesteven District CouncilA new skatepark has partially opened in time for Christmas after a 12-year-old boy was granted his wish.
Work started on the £125,000 facility in Grantham after the boy, called Zak, told his local councillor there was "nothing to do around town".
A "soft opening" was held in Wyndham Park on Friday, with a flat bank, quarter pipe and half pipe now completed.
South Kesteven District Council said contractors would return in the new year to finish installing the rest of the equipment.
Councillor Paul Stokes, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said young people were passionate about their sports and had been travelling to neighbouring towns to take part in them.
"People wanted this and we've listened and moved quickly to deliver it," he added.
"The early 'soft' opening is a bonus, but obviously the facility is some way from the finished article."
A new basketball court will be installed in Dysart Park in the new year, while a refurbished tennis court is due to be ready by the spring.
Funding for the projects has been provided from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
