Dore Road, in Sheffield, has been closed due to the weakened ground

A sinkhole has opened up in a residential street in Sheffield as a result of heavy rain weakening the ground.

The culvert underneath Dore Road collapsed due to high water pressure, according to highways maintenance provider Amey.

The road has been closed while crews further investigate the cause of the hole, which is just short of one metre deep.

"It appears to have been caused by an underground stream that has washed away the soil and gravel underneath the road," a council spokesperson said.

"The recent heavy rain has swollen the stream, increasing the amount of water flowing underground and weakening the ground."

Residents are still able to access their properties, but diversions are in place for other drivers.

There was no specific timeframe on the repairs and the reopening of the road, but it would be no earlier than Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for Amey said.

A CCTV survey was underway to determine how best to rebuild the culvert, they added.
