Football club lodges plans to build padel courts

Ilkeston Town Football Club has lodged plans to build padel courts next to its ground.

The club has submitted a planning application to Erewash Borough Council to construct six padel courts next to the existing facilities at New Manor Ground, off Awsworth Road.

According to the club there is "local demand" for padel and the proposed facility would create an "additional income opportunity".

Planning documents stated the proposed padel courts would be open from 09:00 to 22:00 all year round.

Padel, which has swelled in popularity in recent times, is similar to tennis but is distinguished by shorter rackets, smaller courts and underarm serves.

Earlier this year, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) estimated there were about 800 padel courts in Britain but more than 800,000 players.

According to planning documents there is "significant demand" for padel courts from existing Ilkeston Town Football Club members.

"Many members have tried to play at nearby facilities and have reported not being able to get on the courts due to popularity," documents added.

A report submitted by the applicants said the need for future investment in alternative sporting facilities was "essential to sustain the long-term viability" of the club.

The plans also stated the courts "will diversify the offer of the football club thereby attracting new members and sustaining this leisure facility for the future".
