Plans from Ilkeston Town Football Club to build padel courts next to its ground are set to be given the go-ahead.

Erewash Borough Council's planning committee is recommended by officers to approve plans on 11 March from the club to construct six padel courts next to the existing facilities at New Manor Ground, off Awsworth Road.

According to the club there is "local demand" for padel and the proposed facility would create an "additional income opportunity".

A report from planning officers said the proposals would provide "enhanced facilities" at the club which would be "beneficial" for the town.

'Significant demand'

Planning documents stated the proposed padel courts would be open from 09:00 to 22:00 all year round.

Padel, which has swelled in popularity in recent times, is similar to tennis but is distinguished by shorter rackets, smaller courts and underarm serves.

In 2025, the Lawn Tennis Association estimated there were more than 1,000 padel courts in Britain.

According to planning documents there is "significant demand" for padel courts from existing Ilkeston Town Football Club members.

"Many members have tried to play at nearby facilities and have reported not being able to get on the courts due to popularity," documents added.

A report submitted by the applicants said the need for future investment in alternative sporting facilities was "essential to sustain the long-term viability" of the club.

The plans also stated the courts "will diversify the offer of the football club thereby attracting new members and sustaining this leisure facility for the future".

A report from planning officers states: "The proposed development would provide enhanced facilities at the football club and would assist the club in moving forward and improving its community and sporting offer which would be beneficial not only to the club itself but also to the town and borough as a whole."
