A council has announced plans to scrap Saturday parking charges at its car parks.

Erewash Borough Council already offers free parking at the car parks it owns on Sundays.

The move to extend the offer to Saturdays - and make parking free at authority-owned car parks in the borough, including at Long Eaton railway station, all weekend long - was approved at a meeting on Thursday and will start in April.

The authority said it hoped the free parking offer would bring "much needed business to our high streets that are struggling".

James Dawson, leader of the council, said: "The waiving of car park charges on Saturdays is part of what is a simple mission by the council – to keep making the borough a better and more affordable place to live."

He added the authority would also continue to offer free parking at its car parks during the whole of December following a "popular" incentive last year.
