How campfires and stargazing could ease isolation
Creative Sustainability CICA new "life‑changing" outdoor project has been launched to support young people in rural areas who are struggling with social isolation.
Based in the North Cotswolds, the project is aimed at 16–25‑year‑olds and will offer weekly outdoor activities such as campfires, conservation work and stargazing.
It has been organised by Creative Sustainability CIC, which already runs a number of events and activities in Stroud and is now looking to expand into the wider area.
Outdoor activities lead Rosalind Marshall said these events can make a "profound" difference, enabling young people to feel "empowered to be who they want to be."
"We've had people join us who were suffering from anxiety," Marshall explained. "Over time, they build confidence and build friendships."
'Safe space'
The organisation, which is based in Fromehall Mill, Stroud, offers residential and camping trips, bike workshops, a youth climate group and indoor climbing experiences.
Donna Smith, 23, from Stroud, who has been attending workshops for two years, said it's made her "less anxious around new people."
Ellie‑Mae Crook, 18, also from Stroud, said she had previously struggled to make friends but despite joining the scheme only recently, it had already really helped her.
"I've come here and met new friends, it's really fun," Crook said.
"It's a safe space you can go. They're not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to and everyone's so comforting," Crook added.
Donna SmithThe new project will take place across various locations in the North Cotswolds - an area that is predominantly rural.
Free transport will therefore be provided so young people do not have to rely on parents, peers or taxis for travel.
"We want young people to feel that they have independence and autonomy to join the programme," Marshall explained.
She added the projects they run can be truly "life‑changing".
