A library, which shut its doors at the start of January after its ceiling partially collapsed, will remain closed for "the next three months", a council has said.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) said an assessment of the collapse at Charminster Library found "a small amount of asbestos" at the site and structural joists in need of "essential repairs".

Andy Martin, the authority's leisure, culture and local heritage lead, said the library was "a much-loved community facility but the safety of our customers and staff comes first".

He added that once all assessments were completed the council would have a clearer picture of what needs to be done and the costs.

Martin said it would keep residents updated with the progress of the building.

While it remains closed, books and other items borrowed from the library can be returned to any branch within the Libraries West network.
