Southend United has unveiled plans to open a new matchday hub after taking over a pub near the club's ground.

The new-look Spread Eagle, renamed The Blue Eagle, will feature multiple TV screens and an outdoor fan zone close to Roots Hall.

Renovation work has begun with the aim of opening for the Shrimpers' final home game of the National League season on 25 April.

Chairman Justin Rees said the pub had "huge character", adding: "This is a really exciting moment for the football club."

The move comes despite the Blues announcing a staff restructuring in February that could result in redundancies, saying the club was operating "at a significant financial loss".

It was founded in the Blue Boar, which neighbours The Spread Eagle in Victoria Avenue.

Southend United's away fixtures will be screened at the new-look pub when possible

"It will add a vibrant pre and post-game experience around Roots Hall, and throughout the week it will be a place that brings people together," Rees added.

He said Southend's away fixtures would be shown at the pub when possible.

The refurbishment is being undertaken along with the building's owner, Star Pubs.

Area manager Steve Charlton said: "We're delighted to be working with Southend United to breathe new life into such a historic pub."

On the pitch, Southend are eighth and face table-topping Rochdale on Tuesday evening.
