Repair work will start on the northern North Bridge footpath on 12 January

Repairs are to be carried out on the footpaths of a Hull bridge.

The walkways on North Bridge, which crosses the River Hull in the city centre, "have reached the end of their service life and need replacing", the city council said.

Work will be done in two phases so one of the footpaths remains open to pedestrians and the crossing will remain open to road traffic throughout, the council added.

The northern walkway will be done first starting on 12 January, with work expected to be finished by 23 January. Details of when the southern walkway will be repaired will be announced later.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: "North Bridge provides a vital crossing between east and west Hull, so its maintenance is essential.

"By replacing the footpaths, we aim to futureproof this crossing for pedestrians and accommodate the Freetown Way Cycle Scheme.

"Splitting the work into two phases means we can maintain access, which I hope will reduce disruption for pedestrians and local businesses."
