New McDonald's rejected because of nearby school
Getty ImagesPlans for a new McDonald's drive-thru in Hull have been turned down.
The company applied for permission to build the restaurant on grassland at Marfleet roundabout, Hedon Road.
But city councillors voted against the proposal on Wednesday because they felt the outlet would be too close to Marfleet Primary School.
They referred to guidance in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which states that fast-food outlets within walking distance of schools should be turned down.
Councillor Ted Dolman said he was "lost" as to "why we would go against the NPPF", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
The application, which had been recommended for conditional approval, was discussed by the council's planning committee after it was called in by Councillor Patrick Wilkinson, who represents the Marfleet ward.
He said he objected on "highway grounds" and believed the site would be "busier than the models are suggesting".
However, the committee was told National Highways, which manages the road, had no objections.
