Plans to build 62 homes in Hersham, with new access roads, open space and a woodland walk, have been put forward.

The scheme on land south of Burwood Road would include apartments and family houses, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Developers Ashill Land Ltd said the proposals were designed to "complement and enhance" the existing suburban area of the Surrey village.

The plans also include more than a hectare, or about two acres, of open space, with a "natural playspace", a village green-style hub and a woodland walk open to the public.

Protected trees

The developers said the project would deliver 31 affordable homes, split between affordable rent and shared ownership, to help Elmbridge Borough Council meet local housing demand.

Mixed responses included praise from one resident who said it looked like "a really good and exciting development bringing much-needed life to the village".

Another said: "This development seems like too large an environmental impact on natural land for a small number of dwellings."

Some raised concerns over the displacement of horses, deer, foxes and other wildlife.

Designers said the scheme had been revised following feedback from planning officers and neighbours, with changes to the road layout and the removal of some homes near protected trees to improve garden space and protect the landscape.

Existing trees and hedgerows would largely be retained, alongside new planting aimed at boosting biodiversity, under the plans, and sustainable drainage features would reduce flood risk.

People can comment on the planning application until 8 May. A decision will be made by the council at a later date.
