A 51-year-old man from Blaengwynfi, Neath Port Talbot, has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to make an explosive with intent to endanger life or property.

Police have been at a property in Commercial Street in nearby Abergwynfi after a significant number of illegal weapons were found on Sunday night.

As a precaution, neighbouring properties were evacuated for safety reasons, and members of the public were asked to avoid the area to allow emergency services access.

Ch Supt Stephen Jones from South Wales Police said searches had now concluded and residents were able to return to their homes, with the 51-year-old man in custody.

"I would like to say a massive thank you to all the residents for their understanding while we have made our enquiries and conducted our investigation," he said.

"This news, coupled with the sizeable police presence on their street today, will have been unsettling.

"Our number one concern today was to ensure the safety of those in the immediate area."

A force spokesperson said police and partnership agencies would remain in the area to support people back into their homes.
