Passengers have been warned of severe disruption on rail services between London and Peterborough after planned engineering works overran.

Train operator London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said services might be cancelled, delayed or diverted via Hertford North, and urged passengers to check before travelling.

A spokesperson for Network Rail apologised for the inconvenience, saying the disruption was caused by overnight engineering works overrunning due to a broken-down tamping vehicle, which is used to maintain track alignment and levels.

The disruption was expected to continue until the end of the day.

"We would like to reassure passengers that we are working to resolve this issue. Resources have been secured for this work to take place this afternoon," the spokesperson said.
