Stone block paving is starting to shift in Bailgate, Lincoln

A historic street where drivers endure "bumpy rides" is to be improved at a cost of about £1.7m.

Roadworks in Bailgate, Lincoln, are due to start on 19 January and could take up to three months.

The stone block paving in the street – which connects the cathedral and the Roman Newport Arch – is starting to shift, Lincolnshire Council Council said.

Councillor Michael Cheyne, executive member for highways, added: "These improvements will mean minimal highways maintenance over the next 20 years."

The work will be carried out in five phases to ensure only short sections of the road are closed at any given time.

  • 1 - Westgate to the White Hart hotel, mid-January to early February
  • 2 - Newport Arch to Westgate, early February to early March
  • 3 - Westgate and Bailgate junction, first week of March
  • 4 - Newport to Newport Arch, and Westgate between Greggs and the Castle Hotel, early to late March
  • 5 - The crossing outside Westgate Academy, late March to early April

Footpaths and car parks will remain open throughout.

Cheyne said about 65% of the stone blocks would be reused.
