Ten trees are being removed from Whittons Park in Lincoln

Ten trees are being removed ahead of a project to shore up a slipping hillside in Lincoln.

The trees in Whittons Park will be taken away over the next three days so that the embankment supporting Yarborough Road can be repaired.

Lincolnshire County Council said stop-go boards would be in place, and part of the park would be cordoned off.

The repair work costing £1.7m is due to start in June and will take up to four months after "inadequate embankment drainage" led to "ongoing ground movement" on the road, the council said.

Councillors were told the cracked surface in Yarborough Road could deteriorate if nothing was done

In December, councillors were told the the embankment could collapse if nothing was done.

Sam Edwards, head of highways infrastructure, said: "We always do everything we can to avoid taking down trees but, in this instance, it's essential to the safety repairs we need to carry out here.

"We'll also be planting 10 new trees in the park when we've finished our repair works."

The project will include stabilising and strengthening the existing slope at the section of Yarborough Road overlooking Whittons Park, installing new drainage, removing the existing concrete layby and rebuilding the path near the layby.
