A 3rd Century Roman arch will undergo maintenance repairs to ensure it will survive for the future.

Newport Arch, in Lincoln, is thought to be the only Roman arch in the UK which allows traffic to drive underneath it.

According to the City of Lincoln Council, the initial cost for netting to cover the monument will be £17,000.

Councillor Joshua Wells, portfolio holder for inclusive economic growth at the council said the arch, which had suffered damage after bad weather, was a "key part of Lincoln's story going forward".

Work to repair the arch could take a "number of months"

According to Wells, the work to repair the "tired" arch will take a "number of months".

"With the bad weather we've had recently, a lot of the water has got behind those rocks, and it's caused some issues there," he said.

Work will start in the next couple of weeks by placing netting over the monument to ensure no debris falls onto the road below.

"We just need to make sure we're shoring up the arch for the future," Wells said.

"The ongoing cost, we're not sure yet, but we expect it to be about tens of thousands," he added.

Repairing and maintaining the arch was important, Wells said, as the historical archway was a "crucial part of Lincoln's story".

"It's the only arch that allows traffic underneath it in the UK and we want to keep it like that," he said.

Lincoln has other Roman remains, including an ancient wall and gateway between the City Hall car parks in Lincoln.

The wall suffered damage in an incident in 2025.
