A man has died and several homes have been evacuated after a house fire.

Gloucestershire Police officers were called to a property just off Cirencester Road in Chalford, near Stroud, at about 22:20 GMT on Monday.

The force said a man was found dead inside the house and his next of kin had been informed. About 20 properties were evacuated and a cordon remains in place.

The news comes just weeks after a mother and her two children died in a house fire in nearby Brinscombe. Spt Anton Campbell said he did not "underestimate the further upset this will likely cause to our staff and a community already grieving".

Cirencester Road and Gypsy Lane are closed and drivers have been asked to avoid the area.

National Grid is working to restore power to the area after a cable was damaged by the fire, police said.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service area manager, Matt Amey said: "We understand that this tragic fire, coming so soon after the recent incident in Brimscombe, may cause further concern and sadness in the community.

"Please be reassured that we are here to support you and help keep you safe."
