A number of homes were evacuated and a road closed after a car hit a gas main in a village.

Crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to Brentwood Road, Herongate, close to Brentwood just after 16:45 GMT on Friday.

Residents from seven properties were asked to leave their properties, and Cadent gas engineers worked to make the area safe.

Brentwood Road was reopened after it was closed for several hours, during which time people were asked to avoid the area.

Cadent said it had been on site within 20 minutes, after the crash caused damage to a gas "kiosk".

A spokesman said the gas supply was not affected and the repairs had been carried out.
