Firefighters said they saw smoke coming out of the windows of the bedroom

Firefighters said a bedroom had been completely destroyed by fire after the occupants did not have a working smoke alarm.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to Harwich at 08:05 GMT on Monday to reports of a blaze.

Watch manager Doc Holliday said the crew found the bedroom "well alight" and added: "Unfortunately, it was too late; had there been working smoke alarms in the property, it would have given them an earlier warning that there was a fire."

They continued: "The bedroom has been completely destroyed by fire and smoke.

"The cause of the fire was a faulty electrical item. When you're using electrics, make sure you don't overload sockets and check that all wiring and plugs look safe."

A fire crew from Colchester attended the incident.
