Woman who died after crash 'extraordinary mother'

The family of a mother who died after a suspected hit-and-run crash has paid tribute to her "kindness, warmth, and gentle strength".

Claire Laybourne, 39, from Hebburn, South Tyneside, died on Saturday from serious injuries following a collision on the A19 in Holystone, North Tyneside, at about 22:40 GMT on Friday.

Her family described her as "an extraordinary mother, a devoted partner, a cherished daughter, a loving auntie and a loyal friend" whose "presence lit up every room".

Three men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on bail pending further inquiries, Northumbria Police said.

The force said it was reported that a Volkswagen T-roc - which was being driven by Ms Laybourne - and a Skoda Fabia were both travelling on the northbound carriageway when they collided.

The driver of the Skoda Fabia did not stop at the scene and is believed to have fled the area on foot, travelling north, the force added.

Officers have urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward and police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a black Skoda Fabia, with a 24-plate registration, driving near the scene.

In a tribute, Ms Laybourne's family said: "Claire was a beautiful soul whose kindness, warmth, and gentle strength touched everyone she met.

"The depth of our grief is matched only by the depth of the love we carry for her.

"We will miss her beyond what words are able to portray.

"Her presence lit up every room, and her love held our family together in ways words can never truly capture."
