Two men have been arrested after a crash which left a woman critically injured.

Northumbria Police said it happened on the A19 in Holystone, North Tyneside, at about 22:40 GMT on Friday, and involved a Volkswagen T-Roc and a Skoda Fabia.

Police said the Volkswagen was believed to have collided with the Skoda while overtaking a stationary vehicle on the road. The driver of the Skoda then left the scene, the force said.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a woman in her 30s, was seriously injured and remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The force said two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Both remain in police custody.

A section of the road was closed for much of the day on Saturday while officers investigated, before being reopened in both directions at about 15:30.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who may have dashcam footage of it, has been asked to contact police.
