Pitch invaders get football ban after steward hurt

Two men have been banned from going to football matches for three years after a steward was headbutted in the face during a pitch invasion.

Riley Wood, 25, from Bournemouth, and 28-year-old Brandon Bashforth both admitted entering the playing area during Reading FC's home League One match against Barnsley on 24 January.

Bashforth, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, also pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court to assault by beating.

As well as receiving football banning orders, both men were ordered to pay fines and costs.

Thames Valley Police said Bashforth entered the pitch and attempted to reach the home supporters' section.

When a steward tried to stop him, he pushed the steward and headbutted him in the face, causing a minor injury.

The force said Wood entered the pitch and ran towards the away supporters' section, making gestures towards the away fans.

Wood was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 in costs, while Bashforth received a £600 fine for assault, a £100 fine for entering the pitch and was also ordered to pay £200 in victim compensation and £85 in costs.

The football banning order will prevent him from attending regulated fixtures, and it puts restrictions on travel during major international football events, such as the FIFA 2026 World Cup this summer.

PC Steve Mountain said: "Violence towards stewards, staff or supporters will never be tolerated.

"This banning order sends a clear message that those who choose to involve themselves in disorder at football matches will face significant consequences."
