Police officer sacked for damaging ex's tyres
GoogleA police officer who damaged the tyres of his ex-partner's car has been dismissed from the force.
PC Trevor Brookes was found to have visited his estranged partner's home in November 2024 and damaged they tyres of her car.
A Durham Police misconduct hearing also alleged he told the woman she would need to pay for the damage as he had no money, although Brookes denied making the comment.
Chief Constable Rachel Bacon said Brookes' actions constituted gross misconduct and the only appropriate outcome was "dismissal without notice".
"This was criminal conduct against a female ex-partner," she said.
"Members of the public would lose significant trust and confidence in the police if any other determination was made and the reputation of the police would be significantly damaged if any other sanction was imposed."
Brookes admitted causing criminal damage to the vehicle in November 2025 after at York Magistrates' Court.
The misconduct panel heard he received a fine and a two-year restraining order.
In her determination, Bacon said the victim's request for a restraining order indicated "she was worried that such conduct might happen again".
Bacon said abuse and violence against women in a domestic context was of "high public concern" and she regarded Brookes' criminal damage against his ex-partner as amounting to such violence.
Story corrected on 13 February 2026 to clarify the damage to the car's tyres.
