A taxi driver has had their licence revoked for using illegal number plates and the wrong insurance.

Cheltenham Borough Council said its enforcement team and Avon and Somerset Police officers stopped the driver during the horse racing meeting at Cheltenham on 15 November.

The driver, whose vehicle was licensed in Wolverhampton, was found to have no badges on display, and was using so-called ghost plates - illegal number plates which bypass number plate recognition cameras to avoid charges.

It later emerged the driver had also given Wolverhampton Council a fraudulent insurance certificate.

The City of Wolverhampton's licensing team revoked the driver's private hire and vehicle licences.

They were also added to a national register that will alert the relevant authority if they try to apply for a new licence again.

Cabinet member for safety and communities at Cheltenham Borough Council, Victoria Atherstone, said: "Cheltenham Borough Council is committed to ensuring the safety and legality of taxi and private hire services in our town, including licensed taxis from other authorities

"Ghost plates are obviously illegal and anyone who tries to mislead authorities, residents and visitors to our town need to take notes - you are highly likely to be caught."
