Plans for 39 flats, pub and gym at historic sites

A pub, restaurant, community space and leisure facility are being planned along with 39 apartments as part of the redevelopment of three historic town centre buildings.

Applications have been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council to transform the former library, baths and drill hall in Tunstall.

Tunstall Library Developments Ltd is seeking planning permission and listed building consent for the project, which has been allocated £3.5m of government funding.

The proposals were "a unique opportunity to deliver a sensitive and viable regeneration project that revitalises a significant heritage site," the company's submission stated.

The plan would preserve and enhance the Grade II listed buildings to provide "a well-balanced mixed-use scheme", they added.

If the scheme is approved, the baths, which closed as part of council cuts in 2011, would house a spa pool and gym.

The former drill hall would have a sports bar on the ground floor and a sky bar above, while the former library would be transformed into the cafe and community space.

In addition, 39 new homes would be located across the site, and there would be a car park in the Corporation Yard to provide parking for residents.

There were 23 apartments proposed for the former library building, ranging from one to three bedrooms.

The former baths, fronting Greengates Street, would contain 10 apartments and the drill hall would include six apartments.
