Olli said there was "no doubt" in his mind about donating his kidney to his mum

"I think as soon as we found out that she needed a transplant, in my mind, there was no question that I would put my name forward."

In 2018, Sarah Lloyd, from Oxford, was in desperate need of a kidney transplant after her health took a serious turn for the worse.

Up stepped her son, Olli, who - 20 years after his dad did the same - donated one of his kidneys to help his mother in her time of need.

"My dad did it when in 1998 and everything was sweet, so I was sure if I did the same, then everything would absolutely be fine," Olli said.

"There was no doubt in my mind that that was going to be the decision that I was going to take."

"I assumed that I'd be a match. Thankfully I was," the 34-year-old said.

The donation took place in 2018

Sarah had spent part of her teenage years in and out of Hammersmith Hospital after she was diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease Lupus, aged just 15.

Her health gradually improved, until she suffered a flare up in pregnancy that would force her to require her first kidney transplant, aged 37.

Then in 2018, she required another transplant after her donated kidney began to fail, leading to fibromyalgia.

Having decided to help his mother, Olli said he was "more emotional about it than she was really".

"It was very empowering from my perspective - I think for her, I don't know if it was just natural proceedings."

Olli said he had "always had a really really good relationship" with his mum

Since the transplant eight years ago, Sarah recovered, but has experienced some health implications.

But the 61-year-old said: "My transplants have been amazing, as have the hospitals."

"At the end of the day, I'm here. I may not have been. It was very likely that I wouldn't be. So why would I not just rejoice in every day?"

The pair will be spending Mother's Day apart on Sunday, with Sarah away on holiday.

"Don't waste it. Embrace it," she said.
