Motorists have been warned to avoid a road leading to one of the busiest junctions in the Isle of Man's capital on Sunday as work is carried out to remove a tree.

A section of Quarterbridge Road, in Douglas, is set to be shut between 08:00 and 18:00 GMT.

Diversions will be in place around the closure, which stretches between its junctions with Selbourne Drive and Alexander Drive.

The road leads to a set of two roundabouts at Quarterbridge, which is a main intersection for traffic travelling into the capital from both the south and west of the island.

The Department of Infrastructure said the closure was to allow for the safe felling of the tree on behalf of a private landowner by a contractor.

A spokesman for the DOI said dead trees "tend to become unstable with time and are in danger of falling" and felling it meant it would no longer pose any safety issue to the public.

"The closure has been deliberately requested and authorised for a Sunday to minimise disruption and to particularly avoid conflict with commercial and commuter traffic," he added.

If the works need to be postponed due to the weather conditions on the day, a contingency date of 22 March will be used instead.
