A man has been charged after a "suspicious device" was found in a flat.

Homes within a 50m (164ft) cordon on Washington Road, in the Sharrow area of Sheffield, were evacuated for about nine hours on Wednesday until bomb disposal experts confirmed the device was unviable.

Steven Budziszewski, 56, of Washington Road, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court earlier charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and affray.

He was remanded into custody ahead of a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on 9 April.

Supt Martin Simcock of South Yorkshire Police thanked residents and locals for their "patience and cooperation as officers carried out necessary checks".

The street was closed as a result of the incident and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.
