Thames Valley Police say the man is being questioned about membership of ISIL

A man has been arrested in connection with terrorism offences, police have said.

The 23-year-old from Bletchley, was detained on Tuesday in Milton Keynes.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation and of supporting a proscribed organisation.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest was part of "a pre-planned operation".

The force said the operation was carried out by Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE).

The suspect was questioned about two offences arising from the Terrorism Act 2000.

Thames Valley Police said the offences related to alleged membership and support of the Islamic State group.

Ch Sup Emma Baillie said there could be an increased police presence in the area where the arrest took place

Ch Supt Emma Baillie, Thames Valley Police's command unit commander for Milton Keynes, said: "I appreciate arrests of this nature can cause some concern in the local are, however this was a pre-planned operation and part of ongoing work carried out to keep our communities safe from the threat of terrorism.

"Search activity is ongoing at a residential property in Bletchley, so people living locally may notice an increased police presence while this takes place."
