A man has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of a crash which left a child seriously injured.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said the child remains in hospital receiving treatment after being hit in Rushey Way last Thursday.

Matthew Haylett, of Reading, also faces charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving a vehicle otherwise in accordance with a licence, failing to stop for police, failing to report an accident and driving with no insurance.

The force said the 33-year-old was remanded into custody on Tuesday and is due to appear at Reading Crown Court at a date to be confirmed.

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in relation to the case, TVP added.

The force said this was because a police vehicle was "in the vicinity of the crash".
