The new event is planned for the summer

Sculptures inspired by York Minster's grotesques could be installed across the city as part of a new art trail.

The Watchers of York would feature an interactive trail themed around the stone models - exaggerated sculptures of people, animals and creatures.

Organisers Make It York said the event aimed to bring the figures and their history to life, and celebrate the "quirky charm" of the Minster's many statues.

Plans for the event, which featured in a report on the events body's activity, would see it take place for nine weeks from June 29 to August 31.

The trail of large, whimsical sculptures will be installed in locations across York, including in private gardens and public spaces.

Local and national artists will be tasked with interpreting them in creative and contemporary ways, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The installations will be accompanied by information about the figures, including their origins, backstory and symbolism.

"For centuries, these stone guardians have watched silently over the Minster," Make It York said.

"This project celebrates their quirky charm by allowing them to step off the stonework and wander the streets of York."
