Seven men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man in his 40s died.

Officers from Avon and Somerset Police found the victim seriously injured on Bristol's Stapleton Road at about 22:55 GMT on Monday. He died in hospital on Tuesday morning.

The force said 10 minutes before the man was found, a group of seven men – some of whom were believed to be in possession of bladed weapons – were arrested by officers.

The men, aged between 18 and 29, were re-arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

The force confirmed the victim has not yet been formally identified and efforts to trace the man's family are ongoing.

A forensic post-mortem will take place later.

Police cordons remain in place on Stapleton Road and George Jones Park while forensic investigations continue.

Supt Deepak Kenth said: "This murder enquiry is in its early stages, and we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to identify the person, or persons, responsible.

"Seven arrests were made last night prior to the man's death, and those people will be questioned over the coming hours as we build up a comprehensive picture of what happened.

"We urge anyone with information, however inconsequential it may seem, to please come forward.

"We know the community will be shocked and greatly upset to learn of this tragedy and we will have extra officers in the area to provide reassurance over the coming days.
