Warning issued after dead fish found around park

People have been warned to stay away from a park's waterways after many dead fish were found washed up on the banks.

Nene Park Trust said the bodies were discovered around Ferry Meadows in Peterborough on Tuesday.

It said it believed "the streams coming from the south are bringing polluted water into the park", but an exact cause of death was not yet known.

Environment Agency workers are on site "monitoring the situation".

Joanna Bacon, from the trust, said: "We are advising visitors to keep away from the water and ensure dogs are kept on leads, whilst we wait for guidance.

"The park will remain open for visitors as usual."

The Environment Agency said in a statement: "We are aware of reports of dead and distressed fish on the River Nene in Peterborough.

"Environment Agency officers are on site at the moment monitoring the situation and investigating further.

"They have installed booms to contain a sheen that has been spotted on the river."
