Residents are angry about the condition of railings still awaiting repair at their popular beachfront.

Craig Hornby, from Saltburn, said work is "long overdue" and there is no sign of anything happening at the west side of the lower promenade.

Councillor Philip Thomson said refurbishment money had been used up refreshing the railings between the pier and Hazel Grove, while a Redcar and Cleveland Council spokesperson said a section was "damaged in a vehicle collision", but plans for permanent repairs are being made.

Hornby said: "At the end of the day Saltburn is supposedly the jewel in the crown of Redcar and Cleveland, if we can't repair some railings we have got serious problems."

He said work had taken place on the upper promenade in recent years, but a long stretch of the lower area is still awaiting repair.

"I'm presuming it is an ongoing process," he said.

"It is the low season now so this is the time to do it, but it looks like there is nothing going on."

Thomson said Redcar and Cleveland Council had received some funding from Tees Valley Combined Authority.

He said: "The work that was done from Hazel Grove, which was the starting point of the refurbishment, has reached the pier and the money has been exhausted.

"The railings from the west side of the pier to the Ship Inn are in no better state than they have been."

He said he would continue to ask for funding to be allocated to the neglected stretch of railings.

The council spokesperson said: "Although unsightly, the railings and area have been made safe with the use of additional railings which have been added temporarily.

"Plans to make permanent repairs to the railings are being arranged.

"Wider improvement works to Lower Promenade were completed last year."
