A further two projects in the Isle of Man's capital are set to receive government support to encourage the redevelopment of vacant urban sites.

Plans to redevelop a section of North Quay and a plot in Duke Street have both been approved for funding from the Island Infrastructure Scheme.

Under the scheme, private developers can apply for public funds to pay for up to 25% of a project's cost.

Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston said the projects sought to "transform and regenerate key sites in lower Douglas into vibrant residential, commercial and retail facilities".

"These sites have been unoccupied for a number of years, and their redevelopment will deliver significant visual and amenity improvements to prominent locations within Douglas," he added.

The conditional offers of support are subject to the completion of the planned projects.

Plans for the development on North Quay, which include nine apartments, one townhouse and four commercial units, were approved last year.

The Duke Street project, to include 38 serviced apartments and retail space, is progressing through the planning process.

Projects already supported by the scheme include a hotel, retail and office complex on Villiers Square and a 55-appartment block on Lake Road.

Proposals for a major development on the former Lord Street bus station site were also approved for support in May last year.

However, these plans - to include a cinema, bus facilities, offices, 85 apartments and nine commercial units – had to be resubmitted after a change in the developer fronting the project.

Plans for 38 apartments on the site of a former hotel in Port Erin have also been approved for support from the scheme.
