Extensive repairs are needed to the culvert after a fatal lorry crash in 2024

Work to permanently repair a damaged section of the A1 in Cambridgeshire will begin in 2027, National Highways has said.

A lorry left the southbound carriageway in November 2024, crashed into a field and damaged a 100-year-old water culvert at Water Newton, near Peterborough.

Following temporary repair works, the carriageway was restored to two lanes last year between Wansford and Alwalton while engineers developed a long-term solution.

A spokesperson said: "This will be extensive and complex work to plan and construct an entirely new culvert to replace the damaged structure."

National Highways said preparations for repairs would begin later this year, with the full repair programme scheduled for 2027.

The roads agency added that its preferred option was to renew the culvert along its entire length, rather than simply repair the damaged section, allowing the structure to be rebuilt to modern standards.

A reduced speed limit would remain in place while the works were carried out.

A spokesperson said the repair work was complicated by the presence of a major water main close to the road, as well as a nearby brook feeding into a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.
