A roof has collapsed after an "aggressive fire" broke out in Ipswich, incident commander Lee Wilkins said.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called to Henniker Road at 05:17 BST and sent six engines to the scene.

Crews worked hard to get the blaze, which affected two semi-detached properties, under control, Wilkins added. All the occupants were accounted for, and at least one person was taken to hospital.

The fire service asked people to avoid the area and advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

Flames were "coming out of several windows and [the] roof space" when crews first arrived, Wilkins told the BBC.

"Initial crews faced a very escalating fire and worked very hard to get it under control," he added, calling it aggressive.

Suffolk Police said the cause of the fire was not currently known, and two neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.
