Farmer Karen Friend says the icy weather is costing her money

Temperatures plummeted overnight in south-east England, with many places seeing their coldest night of the winter.

Charlwood in Surrey had a reading of -8.8C (16F), Shoreham in West Sussex saw -8.4C, and Frittenden in Kent -7.8C.

Snow continued to fall in some parts of the region on Tuesday morning, including in Guildford.

A Met Office yellow warning for ice is in place across Kent, Sussex and Surrey from midnight until 10:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Karen Friend, from Frampton Farm in Church Hougham near Dover, said: "The weather makes the day a lot more challenging.

"We have to be breaking the ice in the water troughs every day, and just getting around is a lot more challenging.

"It costs us money too. The grass has frozen over, so we have to hard feed our animals with hay."

Driver Adam Murdin said he was dropping around two tonnes of rock salt on major routes around Maidstone.

He said: "It's a busy time of year for us.

"I'm usually on building sites as a clerk of works officer, but in the winter I drive a gritter.

"I was out yesterday evening and now I'm back from half three in the morning helping to keep the roads safe."

Kristina James-Talbot is operations manager of the York Road Project for street homeless in Woking.

She told BBC Radio Surrey: "You can't imagine what it would be like having nowhere to go in this cold weather.

"We sweep the town looking for homeless people in this weather, make welfare checks to see where we can help them."

Tracey has been a user of the Warm Hub in Dorking during the cold spell.

"I come here to meet people," she said. "It's nice and friendly here."

She said she was "worried" about the cost of heating her home during the cold weather.
