A teenager has been arrested after a police officer was seriously injured when he tried to stop an e-scooter being ridden illegally in Birmingham.

The 18 year-old was spotted acting suspiciously on Northfield High Street at about 13:30 GMT on Thursday and made off down an alleyway, West Midlands Police said.

He made a U-turn when he was faced with officers waiting to stop him, headed back on to the street and crashed into the officer.

The officer suffered a fractured knee and was undergoing surgery in hospital, a force spokesperson said.

The teen, from the Longbridge area, was arrested on suspicion of wounding, dangerous driving and failing to stop for officers and remained in custody.

The e-scooter was seized, the force added.

"The officer who was injured was simply trying to detain the rider so he could be spoken to, but has instead been seriously injured," said Det Supt Dave Sproson.

"Thankfully, he's in good spirits today and is getting lots of support from family and colleagues.

"We're grateful to the members of the public who stopped to help the officer in the immediate aftermath."
