Work has begun to tear down a former shopping centre.

Priory Square was once home to hair shops, B&M and The Oasis market and businesses at The Square, on Priory Queensway in Birmingham, were told to shut their doors indefinitely in March.

At the time a spokesperson for the site, owned by real estate firm Hammerson, said the decision was taken with the health and safety of tenants and the public in mind.

Hammerson confirmed demolition had begun, with old shop fronts ripped off.

"Since closing Priory Square last year, we have secured the site and have started the demolition works," a spokesperson said.

"We remain in dialogue with Birmingham City Council on next steps and will provide an update when there's more to say."

At the time of the closure, The Square was home to more than 30 businesses and traders said they were given just an hour's notice before being evicted.
