Man arrested after early morning house fire

Police and fire crews were called to Withipoll Street in Ipswich

A man has been arrested after a house fire in the early hours of the morning.

Three fire engines were called to a basement fire on Withipoll Street in Ipswich at about 01:10 GMT after a neighbour raised the alarm.

The building was evacuated and all people accounted for, before a stop was called by the fire service at 02:26.

Suffolk Police was also called to the scene and a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage - arson endangering life. He remains in police custody.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said a joint investigation with the police would begin later.
