Walkers and cyclists will be unable to use a bridge on a guided busway for two months while safety fencing is being installed.

The bridge, between the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Trumpington, will also be closed in one direction for buses, with diversion routes put in place.

The closure is part of Cambridgeshire County Council's work to install safety fencing between the busway track and the shared pathway running alongside it.

It agreed to install the permanent fencing and barriers after it was fined £6m following the deaths of three people on the Busway.

The safety works are due to take place between March and May, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Once construction starts, buses will be able to use the bridge to enter the biomedical campus but those leaving it will be diverted.

The diversion route for walkers and cyclists will be through Hobsons Avenue, Addenbrooke's Road and Francis Crick Avenue, said the council.

In June, it agreed to add fences along the length of the Busway, which is the longest of its kind in the world, at a cost of an estimated £4.7m.

The installation work began in October.

A spokesperson for the county council said: "Works are progressing well with the separation fencing, Trumpington Spur is due to be complete by the end of the month and the works at Pagram Way to Histon will be finished by the end of March.

"Then we'll move on to Orchard Park to Cambridge Regional College."
