Addenbrooke's Hospital has said it takes patient safety extremely seriously

A hospital has ordered a review of its neurosciences services after concerns were raised.

Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge said it had commissioned the independent and "rapid" assessment.

The review would look at "a number of clinical teams" but Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) did not disclose the nature of the concerns.

They said patient safety was the "highest priority" and that the review was expected to conclude by the end of next month.

"Patient safety is our highest priority," said a CUH spokesperson.

"We continually review outcomes across our services to identify where improvements can be made and to ensure patients receive the best possible care."

The review, first reported by Sky News, is being carried out by two royal colleges - which are the medical bodies responsible for setting standards across the UK.

It follows the start of another external review into Kuldeep Stohr, who is being investigated over hundreds of surgeries involving children at the hospital.

In October, Addenbrooke's was criticised for missed opportunities to reduce harm to patients.

According to the hospital's website, Addenbrooke's provides acute neurosurgical services for all of East Anglia.

The neurosciences services include a critical care unit as well as research facilities.

The trust said it took concerns "extremely seriously".

"The review is examining a number of clinical teams to identify opportunities to strengthen clinical governance arrangements," the spokesperson added.

"Once the review has concluded, we will publish and act on all recommendations."

Addenbrooke's and the Rosie hospitals were rated as good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2023, following their last overall inspection.

In 2019, the CQC said the hospital's referral-to-treatment rate for neurosurgery was performing above the England average.
