Treasures unearthed by detectorists Lorraine Stanley and her late husband Andy Stanley have gone on display

A new exhibition of "phenomenal" finds by a metal detecting husband and wife team has opened at a museum.

Lorraine Stanley and her late husband Andy began the hobby in 1990 and have unearthed an amazing collection of objects.

Stanley said her most "unbelievable" discovery was a gold Celtic stator coin from 55BC that filled her with a "fuzzy feeling" when she found it.

The 'History Beneath Our Feet' exhibit at Weston Museum features finds from the Celtic, Roman, Medieval and Tudor periods – all found within ten miles of Weston-super-Mare.

"It's amazing, just below the soil you can pick up a little Roman coin and the last person to touch that was a Roman," Stanley explained.

"When I found it I just looked at it in my hand and thought, 'Oh my gosh', I couldn't believe it," she added.

Peter Kaye from the museum said it is wonderful to have the discoveries on display.

"It's such a passion for her - she's done talks with our societies about metal detecting and works with our young archaeological group," he said.

"Her work just shows people what they can find if they start now and it just highlights the romans were around Weston. It's amazing."

"It's something you don't really get to see - what's under the ground," he said.

"I think it's fantastic. It really connects you with history."

The exhibition at Weston Museum runs until 4 July.
