Candidates are being invited to stand in a by-election following the death of the former lord mayor of Leicester.

Nominations have opened for people wanting to stand to represent the Stoneygate ward on Leicester City Council.

The seat became vacant after the death of Labour councillor Manjula Sood on 24 December at the age of 80.

No date has yet been confirmed for the election but the deadline for candidate nominations is 16:00 GMT on Friday 23 January, the council said.

The city council is currently run by Labour, which holds 31 of the 54 available council seats and has Sir Peter Soulsby as elected mayor.

The Conservatives are the largest opposition party and have 15 seats on the authority.

There are three Green city councillors, three Liberal Democrats, and one independent member.
