Police say a man, allegedly under the influence of cannabis, was lucky to walk away without serious injury after a high-speed crash saw his car hit a tree "some 10ft (3m) up the trunk".

The smash happened near Wigton, Cumbria, on Saturday with the vehicle coming to a rest approximately 50ft (15m) along the road, with the engine thrown a further 20ft (6m).

The man, who was checked over at the scene, failed a roadside drug test and was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and for possession of cannabis, Cumbria Police said.

It comes as the force launches Operation Limit targeting drink and drug-drivers.

A similar crackdown last year saw more than 200 people arrested.
