Detectives are investigating whether the same gang attempted to steal ATMs from two supermarkets in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The incidents, which happened 100 minutes and 40 miles apart, both involved Nissan Navara pick-ups which were abandoned at the scenes.

Police Scotland said the first attempted theft featured a white vehicle and occurred at 01:10 on Edinburgh Road, Glasgow.

The second happened around 02:50 in Whitehouse Road, Edinburgh, and featured a black pick up, which was then deliberately driven at a police car.

A force spokesperson said the officer involved was not injured.

BBC Scotland News understands officers are examining whether the crimes are linked due to the similarities between them.

Four masked men dressed in dark clothes were seen in the area around the time of the attempted theft in Glasgow.

The white Navara used by the gang was left at the scene.

The suspects escaped in a grey hatchback vehicle along Edinburgh Road.

Det Insp Ross Jamieson said: "We believe this was a targeted attempt to steal the ATM.

"Our investigation is progressing, but we are particularly keen to hear from motorists and local residents who may be able to help."

Meanwhile, a black Navara was used in a bid to steal the Edinburgh ATM before it was deliberately driven at a police car.

The driver then then got into a vehicle, thought to be an Audi A3, with another two men.

It made off in the direction of Maybury Road.

All three suspects were masked and dressed in black.

Det Insp Alan Sharp said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious."

Officers investigating both incidents urged anyone with relevant information or relevant footage from dash-cams or doorbells to contact Police Scotland.
